See More Clearly with Eyebright Plus

Eyebright Plus is a unique combination of the most renowned nutrients for helping support eye health. Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), cataracts and poor night vision can affect anyone. The best way to help prevent such conditions is to increase your daily intake of lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid (the pigment that gives fruits & vegetables their colour) and acts as a powerful antioxidant. There are approximately 600 types of carotenoids in nature, but only 20 of them make their way directly to the eye. Lutein is one of the only ones out of this 20 that is deposited in high quantities into the macular portion of the eyes.

The Macula of the eye is the small area at the centre of the retina that allows us to see straight in front of us. In order to carry out detailed activities that require good vision like reading & writing, or to see colour, the macula is of the upmost importance. Lutein protects the eye by producing pigments in the macula. The pigments help with vision by filtering out harmful blue light wavelengths that can damage the eye. The more pigments your eye has, the less chance you have of suffering from ARMD.

Within the eyes is the ‘lens’. One of the most important functions of the lens is to collect and focus light on the retina (which is located at the back of the eye). This is why the lens needs to remain “clear” otherwise it can lead to visual impairment such as cataracts. The main reason the lens becomes cloudy is damage due to oxidation, which is why antioxidants are required to help neutralise free radicals.

Lutein’s antioxidant capabilities help fight free radical cell damage caused by blue light or sun exposure, and other factors that increase the risk of developing disorders like macular degeneration and cataracts. In doing this, lutein helps protect healthy cells while preventing the growth of harmful ones.

Discover The Unique Formulation

Lutein: A carotenoid with antioxidant properties scientifically proven to support eye health & vision. Antioxidants like lutein protect healthy eye cells whist preventing the growth of malignant ones.

Lycopene: A carotenoid with antioxidant properties proven to support eye health & vision. It’s also a phytonutrient which helps protect the eyes from oxidative stress.

Eyebright: Renowned for treating eye ailments. Contains vitamins B, C, E, and beta-carotene, alkaloids, antioxidants and flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, defensive compounds, tannins and volatile oils.

Bilberry: A real superfood! Contains high levels of antioxidants ‘anthocyanins’, used to improve night vision or vision handicaps in low light, decreasing vascular permeability and capillary fragility.

What is Age Related Macular Degeneration and what are Cataracts?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes you to lose central vision – that is, what you see when you focus straight ahead. In AMD, this vision becomes increasingly blurred.

Macular degeneration develops when the Macula, (the part of the eye responsible for central vision) is unable to function as effectively as it used to due to damage either by a build-up of deposits called drusen (known as Dry AMD) or when abnormal blood vessels form underneath the macula and damages cells (known as Wet AMD). Wet is far more serious than Dry. Dry is the most common form of AMD.

This sight loss usually happens gradually over time, although it can sometimes be rapid.

In such eye health cases, prevention is the first step to maintaining and supporting eye health. A healthy diet rich in Lutein-filled foods are ideal, but taking a daily Lutein supplement, combined with numerous other eye health nutrients, may be the best way to help prevent such visual impairment in later life.

Cataracts can occur as one ages when changes are observed in the lens of the eye which causes it to become less clear. This result is vision becoming ‘cloudy’. The lens is the transparent structure situated behind the pupil.

When light enters the eye, it passes through the cornea and then the lens which focuses it on to the retina.

Cataracts may start to develop in a person's lens as they get older. This prevents some of the light reaching the back of the eye. Eventually, cataracts worsen and begin to affect vision. Ultimately, surgery is required to remove and replace the affected lens.

As Lutein has been found to be one of the only antioxidants to be able to reach the eye and help support eye health, taking a daily supplement like Eyebright Plus may be an ideal way to help prevent such conditions developing in later life.

Discover the Power of Eyebright Plus

Lutein is not the only powerhouse antioxidant in this unique formulation. There is a few, and Lycopene is one of them. Lycopene, like lutein is a carotenoid, and so possesses all the abilities that lutein does. It is also a phytonutrient – an antioxidant found in plants. Cleverly, plants use them as a defence against their own free radical environmental damage, and once we consume it, we give our bodies the ability to fight free radical cell damage also. This is the important factor as, as previously mentioned, oxidative stress (free radicals) cause common eye conditions, and Lycopene has been found to help protect the eyes from oxidative stress. Lycopene has been found to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which may be able to help slow down or even stop some reactions within the eye that can lead to macular degeneration.

Eyebright (Euphrasia Officinalis) is an herb. Surprisingly, this herb contains an abundance of nutrients including vitamins B, C, E, and beta-carotene (which act as antioxidants within the body), antioxidants and flavonoids, iridoid glycosides (which provide anti-inflammatory properties), defensive compounds, tannins and volatile oils. Eyebright is renowned for its use in treating eye related problems, as well as slowing down progressive vision weakness due to age. The tannins have been found to help reduce inflammation and swelling in the eye as well as also create a protective coating on the surface of the eye.

Bilberry (also known as Vaccinium myrtillus L.) is considered amazingly beneficial to eye health. It contains naturally-producing chemicals known as anthocyanosides. Anthocyanosides (such as those phytonutrients in Lycopene) are plant pigments that have powerful antioxidant properties. These antioxidants are said to search the body for free radicals, in order to help prevent or reverse damaged cells. Due to its anthocyanosides, bilberry is commonly used to help improve night vision or vision handicaps in low light, decreasing vascular permeability and capillary fragility.

Bilberry, is one of the richest natural sources of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are polyphenolic components that give bilberry its colour and rich antioxidant content. These powerful anthocyanins are thought to be responsible for the many health benefits of bilberry. Bilberry contains numerous phenolic compounds, including the flavonols, quercetin and catechins, tannins, ellagitannins and phenolic acids; yet, the anthocyanins found in the bilberry are, undoubtedly, the biggest contribution to its phytonutrient density. As with all the ingredients within Eyebright Plus, Bilberry too has been found to also provide protective effects against and macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.

Lutein in the Press

One of the most common causes of poor sight is a condition called macular degeneration. This condition accounts for 50 per cent of all blindness and sight problems in the UK. Imagine that your eye is like a camera. There is a lens and an opening at the front that focuses objects onto the retina at the back of your eye. The macula lies in the centre of the retina, which is sensitive to light.

Sometimes the cells of the macula become damaged and you lose the ability to appreciate colours or focus on detailed activities like reading. The condition rarely causes total blindness but can blur your central vision and sometimes make you sensitive to light.

It normally affects those over 60 years old, earning the name age related macular degeneration (ARMD), but a genetic form of the condition can also affect children and young people. Doctors do not know exactly why the cells of the macular start to fail. One theory is that ARMD is triggered by free-radicals, harmful chemicals that your body picks up from sunlight, the atmosphere and cigarette smoke.

A recent study by the Florida International University found that eyes containing higher amounts of a nutrient called lutein were up to 80 per cent less likely to be suffering from ARMD.

Lutein protects the eye by forming pigments in the macula. The pigments help with vision by filtering out harmful blue light wavelengths that can damage the eye. The more pigments your eye contains, the less likely it is to fall prey to ARMD. Unfortunately lutein is not generated naturally by the body so you need to make sure you are getting enough from other sources.

A study published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science discovered that volunteers taking 10 mg of natural lutein supplements every day for 12 weeks significantly increased the amount of macular pigment in their eyes.

The Science behind Eyebright Plus

Tos T. J. M. Berendschot et al conducted a study titled: ‘Influence of Lutein Supplementation on Macular Pigment, Assessed with Two Objective Techniques’, 2000, published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, to discover if Macular Pigment (MP) may protect against age-related macular degeneration and to determine the extent of changes in the macular pigment density as a consequence of oral supplementation with lutein.

Eight subjects participated in this study. They took 10mg lutein per day for 12 weeks. Plasma lutein concentration was measured at 4-week intervals.

After 4 weeks, mean blood level of lutein had increased from 0.18 to 0.90 μM and measurement of the MP density also showed an increase. (The right graph depicts the results in comparison to two other studies: Hammond et al which consisted of 15 weeks supplementations, and Landrum et al, which consisted of 20 weeks supplementation, which is why results are so different. Nevertheless, the graph clearly shows the increase in MP for ‘this’ study).

Researchers concluded that supplementation with lutein significantly increased the density of the Macular Pigment.
